A US court ordered the sale of TikTok.
This was the verdict issued by the Federal Court of Appeal. The Chinese owner of ByteDance has until January 19 to sell TikTok, otherwise the social network with its 170 million users in the States will simply be blocked.
TikTok itself does not appear to have stated that the appeal will go to the Supreme Court. The network hopes for the First Amendment to the US Constitution – the guaranteed right to freedom of speech. TikTok says the decision sets a “dangerous precedent.”
In their lawsuit, TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance tried to argue that the obligation to sell the US share of the app violates the Constitution. The court rejected their complaint.
The law, which would ban TikTok if it is not sold, was passed this spring. It will come into force on January 19, 2025. US President-elect Donald Trump, who takes office on January 20, has promised to “save” the app, although he advocated banning it during his first term. The decisions are in Joe Biden’s hands. He may delay the sale deadline by 90 days. And then Trump will come into play.
