The group’s leader, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, announced plans to create a government based on institutions and a democratically elected council.
The main goal of the Syrian rebels remains the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime, as well as the “building of a new Syria.” This is what Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, said, CNN reported on Friday, December 6.
Jolani emphasized the intention to create a government based on institutions and a democratically elected council. He noted that the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formed on the basis of the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda, aims to establish a new model of governance in Syria.
The rebels captured the strategic cities of Aleppo and Hama, dealing a blow to the Assad regime and its allies Russia and Iran.
Jolani has tried to distance his group from its extremist past, using his real name Ahmed al-Sharaa and declaring openness to minorities.
He said his views have changed since his time with al-Qaeda, and that the new group seeks to avoid the brutal tactics common to jihadist groups.
The rebel leader assured that Christians and other minorities will live safely under their rule. Human rights activists have expressed doubts about some of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s actions, but Jolani insists that the problems have been addressed.
He also added that the new Syrian government must be institutional and transparent.
“Syria deserves an institutional system of governance, not one where a leader makes arbitrary decisions,” the rebel leader concluded.
As you know, the second largest city in Syria, Aleppo, is no longer under the control of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Rebels have already captured Aleppo’s airport and dozens of nearby towns. This is their first offensive in five years against President Bashar al-Assad’s army and the Russian contingent.
In this regard, Assad immediately flew to Moscow. According to media reports, Russia will provide additional military aid to Syria to prevent the rebels from advancing.
