President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky responded to the latest events in Georgia.
Ukraine is already preparing sanctions against the Georgian authorities due to the crackdown on protests. The corresponding decision was made after the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov, reported to President Vladimir Zelensky about the situation in Georgia. The head of state announced this on December 4.
Zelensky is convinced that “the current government in Georgia is pushing the country into obvious dependence on Russia,” so this is “not just a problem of one people.”
It’s just shameful the lengths they are going to now against their people. And when Moscow praises this government in Georgia, this clearly indicates for whom they are now working in Tbilisi and for whom they are breaking up the protests. Definitely not for Georgia. We are preparing our legal response and working with Europeans and other partners on concrete action. I instructed to prepare appropriate sanctions decisions,” the president noted.
Budanov also reported to Zelensky about Russian intentions for the near future and the situation in Syria. The President received information about how a change in the balance of power in Syria could change global circumstances.
Let us remind you that on November 28, the European Parliament did not recognize the results of the parliamentary elections in Georgia and called for new ones. Deputies condemned numerous violations in the October 26 elections and emphasized that the official results, according to which the pro-government Georgian Dream party won, “do not reflect the freedom of the Georgian people.”
After this, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that Georgia was refusing negotiations on accession to the European Union until 2028 and any budget grants from the European Union.
After this, daily mass protests began in Tbilisi, which were brutally dispersed by security forces.
