The Verkhovna Rada did not vote on bill No. 10242 on pressure on journalists. The CPC reported this on Wednesday, December 4.
213 representatives of the people voted for this bill.
While another 229 representatives supported the initiative to send the bill for the second reading.
Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk invited faction leaders to discuss this draft law.
The CPC said it was “a small temporary victory, but the battle is not yet won.”
“We hope there is no more desire to break the deal and push this harmful idea again,” the message added.
Earlier, Ukrainian Media Rukh, media and human rights organizations called on the Verkhovna Rada not to support bill No. 10242 in its current version, because, according to the authors of the appeal, it “presents a significant threat to freedom of speech, the work of journalists, the protection of journalistic resources and whistleblowers of corruption in Ukraine. “
Bill No. 10242 provides for “amending the Criminal Code of Ukraine to establish criminal liability for unauthorized interference, sale or dissemination of information processed in public electronic registers and strengthening criminal liability during martial law for criminals that is an offense in the use of information and communication systems.” The document was registered in parliament on November 9, 2023.
