The South Korean government supported the “martial law lifting plan” demanded by parliament.
The country’s prime minister’s office said the proposal was approved at 4.30 local time. The martial law lasted for about six hours.
Before this, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yol said that he would abolish martial law at a government meeting. This happened after the parliament’s decision. According to the Constitution, the President must lift martial law in such a case.
The head of the opposition Democratic Party, Park Chang-dae, said the South Korean president cannot escape charges of treason and must “resign immediately.”
In the April 2024 parliamentary elections, the Democratic Party won 184 seats out of 300 in the National Assembly, which significantly weakened the country’s conservative President Yoon Seok-yol.
Yoon Seok Yeol has been unpopular since taking office in 2022. Over the summer, a petition for his resignation received more than 811 thousand signatures. He has low ratings, in part due to rising prices for food, housing, labor conflicts and a sharp drop in the birth rate. One of the blows to her reputation was a hidden camera video in which First Lady Kim Keon-hee allegedly accepted a Dior bag worth $2,200 as a gift.
