The unnamed diplomats explained that there is currently no sign of the necessary consensus among Alliance members to make such a decision.
NATO foreign ministers will meet on Tuesday, December 3, at a meeting in Brussels. On the eve of this meeting, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga said that inviting our country to the Alliance would remove one of Russia’s main arguments for launching the war, that is, preventing Ukraine from joining the NATO. However, members of the bloc are unlikely to listen to Kyiv and issue an invitation after the meeting, Reuters reports.
The diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that there is currently no sign of the necessary consensus among NATO’s 32 members. The corresponding decision will destroy Ukraine’s hopes for political momentum in anticipation of the return of US President-elect Donald Trump to the White House, the news agency believes.
The meeting will focus on strengthening support for Ukraine so that it is in the strongest position next year “entering potential negotiations,” a senior US official said.
“It will take weeks and months to reach a consensus, I don’t think it will happen tomorrow, I would be very surprised that the best way to do this is to increase funding, weapons and mobilization,” the official concluded.
As you know, Ukraine expected to receive an official invitation to NATO at the July summit in Washington, but this did not happen.
In addition, Ukraine called on NATO to give it an invitation to join the Alliance at a meeting to be held on December 3-4 in Brussels.
