Air strikes by the Russian Federation and Syria in Aleppo could be considered war crimes.
The European Union, due to the escalation of the civil war in Syria, called on the parties to reach a political settlement of the conflict and condemned the intervention of Russia. This was said on Monday, December 2 by EU Foreign Policy Speaker Anouar El-Anouni, writing EP.
“We call on all parties to de-escalate and ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as unimpeded humanitarian access, in accordance with international humanitarian law,” the statement said.
The EU representative drew attention to Russia’s involvement in the conflict in Syria and condemned Russia’s airstrikes in populated areas of the country and its continued support for the repression of the Assad regime.
“The latest escalation once again shows the need for a political settlement of the conflict, for which Syria itself will be responsible, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254,” El-Anouni added.
Syrian and Russian warplanes on Monday, December 2, carried out a series of airstrikes on areas in northwestern Syria recently captured by rebels.
According to the White Helmets, a Syrian civil defense organization operating in rebel-held areas, there were civilian casualties and many residential buildings were destroyed.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian and Russian government airstrikes targeted rebel-held areas of Aleppo, rural Hama and Idlibu.
It should be noted that the second largest city in Syria, Aleppo, is no longer under the control of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Rebels have already captured Aleppo’s airport and dozens of nearby towns. This is their first offensive in five years against President Bashar al-Assad’s army and the Russian contingent.
In this regard, Assad immediately flew to Moscow. According to media reports, Russia will provide additional military aid to Syria to prevent the rebels from advancing.
