The German Defense Minister said that the Russian fleet is “very active and poses a clear threat” in the North and Baltic seas, as well as in the North Atlantic.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius considers it necessary to buy four more new submarines worth more than 4.5 billion euros due to threats from the Russian fleet. It was reported by Zeit Online.
According to Pistorius, the Bundestag budget committee will approve the submarine procurement plan on Wednesday.
“We need submarines because the threat situation at sea really calls for it,” the minister said.
He noted that the Russian fleet is “very active and poses a clear threat” in the North and Baltic seas, as well as in the North Atlantic.
As is known, in 2021, Germany and Norway signed a general contract with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems for the initial purchase of six submarines. The project is called U212 CD and its stated purpose is a joint design for submarines of both countries.
Today Germany will increase the number of new submarines from two to six. Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gramm said in a meeting with Pistorius that his country wanted to increase the number from four to six.
The new submarines will be about 72 meters long – slightly longer than the existing German 212 A class submarines – and will operate with a crew of 30 people.
Pistorius also recalled Germany’s proposal to build frigates with Norway. Norway plans to make a decision this year.
We remind you that Germany does not exclude the possibility of war breaking out in Europe in the next five years, and therefore they are strengthening military training.
It is also reported that Germany is developing a national plan for the repair of bunkers. The plan includes different types of events.
