Donald Trump has announced that upon taking office he plans to replace current FBI Director Christopher Wray with Cash Patel, a well-known supporter of conspiracy theories about the “deep state.”
He will be loyal to the newly elected president, having already worked with Trump during his first presidency.
Cash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator and champion of “America First” who has dedicated his career to exposing corruption, upholding justice and protecting the American people, Trump said.
Patel rose to prominence in Trump’s orbit in 2018 when he worked as an aide to Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee at the time. Patel played a key role in Nunes’ efforts to discredit the FBI’s investigation into Russian aid to Trump’s 2016 re-election campaign.
The 44-year-old son of Indian immigrants, Patel is also known for his penchant for spreading conspiracy theories. He, in particular, supported unproven allegations of “deep state” interference in US domestic politics and accusations of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Trump’s choice means he wants loyalists in leadership positions in law enforcement and intelligence who can fulfill his demands and shield him from future scrutiny.
If senators approve the nomination, Patel will replace FBI Director Christopher Wray, whom Trump appointed in 2017 to a 10-year term. Ray must either resign or be fired by Trump to make way for Patel.
Wray fell out of favor with the US president-elect when the FBI helped lead a federal investigation into Trump’s handling of secret recordings (the case was dropped).
