Vladimir Putin has threatened to launch a new attack on Ukraine with an intercontinental ballistic missile, which he calls the Oreshnik. The target could be Kyiv.
There is nothing particularly new about the capabilities of the Oreshnik rocket. The use of these types of weapons will not lead to an escalation of the war. This was stated on Friday, November 29, in a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It is indicated that the focus on the range and payload of the missile and comparing it to a meteor is intended to scare Ukraine and the West and distract Kyiv from further attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the territory of the Russian Federation with Western systems.
“Even Putin’s threats to strike the ‘decision-making centers’ in Kyiv are empty words, as Russian forces routinely strike civilian and critical infrastructure in Kyiv with drones and missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads,” the report said.
They believe that Oreshnik’s strike does not mean that the Kremlin will use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, even in response to strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Russian territory using Western weapons.
“Thus, the ongoing threat of Oreshnik and Russia’s missile capabilities remains part of the Kremlin’s reflexive control information operation and is unlikely to be a harbinger of the development of Russia’s latest deep strike capabilities,” says the Institute for the Study of War.
Let’s recall that Putin said that the “decision-making centers” in Kyiv could be the next targets for the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile, which was used by Russian troops in the attack on the Dnieper on November 21.
Subsequently, Putin, answering a question about attacks on “decision-making centers” in Ukraine, said that “everything is possible during the day.”
