The Security Service of Ukraine neutralized an intelligence group of Russian military intelligence (better known as the GRU) operating in Kharkov.
Three locals set up caches with money and live grenades in the vicinity of the city. Thus, the defendants had to create a “reserve” for other agents and saboteurs of the Russian Federation for subversive activities in the region.
According to the instructions of Russian military intelligence, the attackers made caches mainly in forest plantations, and then sent the coordinates of the caches to their Russian curator via messenger.
In addition, the agents collected intelligence on defense force bases. To do this, they walked around the territory of Kharkov and the surrounding area, where they carried out reconnaissance using coordinates received from the invaders.
According to the investigation, the intelligence group included two former employees of the disbanded special police unit “Berkut” and the wife of one of them – all residents of Kharkov.
The defendants came to the attention of the aggressor because of a former Berkut member who fled to the Russian Federation even before the start of a full-scale war and began working for the occupiers. The SBU counterintelligence exposed the intelligence group, documented its crimes and detained all three of its participants in Kharkov.
During the searches, mobile phones with evidence of cooperation with the GRU, as well as RGD-5 military grenades, were confiscated from them.
Security Service investigators informed the detainees of suspicion (in accordance with the crimes committed) under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Part 2 Art. 28, part 2 art. 111 (high treason committed under martial law by prior conspiracy by a group of persons);
- Part 1 Art. 263 (illegal handling of ammunition and explosives).
The perpetrators are in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
