Late on Wednesday, the TotalEnergies team announced the retirement of one of its riders, Daniel Osi, after the fifth stage with a fractured cervical vertebra. The Italian will have to be immobilized for several weeks after a terrible fall during a cobblestone stage in the north. Considering the extremely violent concussion that the runner suffered, the health condition of this specialist in the classics is almost reassuring.
As the race tightened and the peloton began to scatter over the cobbles with punctures, mechanical problems and descents, Oss tried, like many riders, to avoid the roughest part of the road by holding on to the limits. Taking a risk that turned into a disaster when the Andralpine boat veered slightly to the right of the road, initially destabilized by the presence of spectators who had already advanced too far.
Partially losing control of his bike, Oss then slammed head-on into another spectator just two meters away with his helmet on his face as he busily snapped a photo. In a horrific crash, the French formation runner fell hard to the ground, dragging Austrian Michael Gogle (Alpetsin) in his fall, who was following him very closely.
The latter surrendered before being taken to the hospital, where a fracture of the clavicle and femur was diagnosed. A shaken Osi was able to get back on track and even make it to the finish line, but tests revealed a fracture that forced him to end his 2022 Tour adventure.
