The Social Democratic Party of Germany has officially announced Olaf Scholz as a candidate for the post of Chancellor of Germany, who will lead the party to early elections, in particular through his balanced policies.
The corresponding decision of the SPD leadership was announced by party chairman Saskia Essken today, November 15, in Berlin, the Ukrinform agency reports.
Today we unanimously nominated Olaf Scholz as our candidate for chancellor in the upcoming elections, Essken said and declared that the Social Democrats are thus entering the election battle.
It is noted that, in the opinion of the party leadership, “Scholz is the right candidate for Germany in this particular situation,” because the current head of government has “experience and princes” and is doing everything right.
Essken also called the chancellor’s decision to fire his finance minister, the leader of the Liberal Party, Christian Lindner, correct.
Scholz himself in his speech placed special emphasis on the topic of Ukraine, calling the right decision to help Ukraine, to become the greatest supporter of Ukraine in Europe. He emphasized that his “government did everything to prevent Ukraine from being left alone… And at the same time, it did everything to prevent the war from expanding.”
We are the state that truly constantly supports Ukraine and does not leave it alone in the defense struggle for freedom, democracy and sovereignty,” he noted.
Scholz stressed that the mobilization of such assistance was correct.
But at the same time, the government under my leadership did everything to ensure that this war did not undergo even greater escalation and did not develop into a war between Russia and NATO. And this remains the central challenge now,” Scholz emphasized.
Despite all the discussions, it has always been important to me that we always make the right decisions, for example when I said that we would not transfer Taurus missiles, for example when I said that I did not agree with the weapons that we transmitted, strikes were carried out deep into Russian territory,” he added.
German media note that the decision to nominate Scholz was made after tough debate. Last week, Scholz’s fellow party member, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who has a significantly higher rating among voters, refused to nominate his candidacy. Scholz’s nomination will be officially confirmed at the party congress on January 11.
On November 6, Scholz announced the dismissal of Finance Minister Christian Lindner, head of the Free Democratic Party (VDP). After this, almost all ministers who were members of the VDP announced that they would voluntarily resign. As a result, the ruling coalition in Germany collapsed.
Early elections to the Bundestag will be held on February 23, 2025.
