Marcel Ciolacu has submitted his resignation from the position of leader of the Social Democratic Party of Romania.
In Romania, after 100% of the votes were counted in the first round of the presidential elections, the candidates who will face off in the second round have been determined. This was confirmed by the results on the website of the Central Electoral Commission of Romania on Monday, November 25.
In first place with 22.94% of support was an independent candidate – far-right pro-Russian politician Calin Georgescu. No opinion polls on the eve of the election predicted that he would reach the second round, so his victory became a sensation.
In second place is the representative of the opposition Union for the Safety of Romania, pro-European and pro-Ukrainian candidate Elena Lasconi with 19.18% of the votes.
Lasconi was only 2,742 votes ahead of incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaka, who finished third.
Ciolacu has already submitted his resignation from the position of head of the Social Democratic Party of Romania. The politician said he would not challenge the poll results.
The head of Romania’s National Liberal Party coalition, Nicolae Ciuca, also announced his resignation amid poor results in the presidential elections. It came in fifth place with 8.79%.
Georgescu was one of the most committed propagandists of anti-Western ideas in Romania. He argued that the EU and NATO do not properly represent Romania’s interests and claimed that “Russia’s war in Ukraine is being promoted by American military companies.”
Lasconi is known for criticizing the current Romanian government for inaction against Russian drones that occasionally land on Romanian territory, and has not ruled out a ban on entry into Romania for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban .
We remind you that the exit polls predicted that the current Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku and the opposition candidate Elena Lasconi will advance to the second round of the Romanian presidential election.
