In South Korea, a man deliberately gained weight to avoid military conscription. This was reported by The Korea Herald.
On the advice of a friend, in order to avoid compulsory military service, he began to eat more calories and drink more water before controlling the weights.
During the initial medical examination, the 26-year-old accused was found fit. However, at the last test he was diagnosed with obesity – the Korean weighed 102 kilograms with a height of 169 centimeters. His body mass index is 35.8.
Doctors deemed him fit only for non-combat duty.
The court found the man guilty of attempting to avoid compulsory military service by deliberately gaining weight and sentenced him to one year in prison, suspended for two years.
His friend was found guilty, having recommended gaining weight to avoid service and even giving weight gain advice. He was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years, for aiding and abetting.
By law, in South Korea, all men over the age of 18 must serve in the army for at least 18 months.
