Nicosia is convinced that having the necessary infrastructure and opportunities makes the country attractive to Washington.
Cyprus decided to join the North Atlantic Alliance. This was reported by the Greek publication Kathimerini, citing sources of knowledge.
Cyprus President Nicos Christodolidis discussed the country’s prospects for joining NATO with US President Joe Biden at an October meeting in Washington.
The parties paid special attention to modernizing the defense potential of Cyprus to meet NATO standards.
Nicosia is convinced that having the necessary infrastructure and opportunities makes the country attractive to Washington. Cyprus has also turned to the United States with a request to purchase military equipment and has expressed a desire to send National Guard officers for training at American military academies.
White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan confirmed that Cyprus has a long-term and strategic plan for NATO integration. In Washington, the plan is called a “win-win.”
A key element of the strategy is progress in resolving the Cyprus conflict and improving relations between Cyprus and Turkey.
Let’s remember that before the next NATO summit in June 2025 in The Hague, the leaders of the member countries of the bloc must agree on three issues, said Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Rutte said Russia was the only country that crossed the “red line.”
