About 150 thousand internally displaced persons returned to the temporarily occupied territories, including up to 70 thousand to the temporarily occupied Mariupol.
Maxim Tkachenko, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, Deoccupation and Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, National Minorities and Interethnic Relations, spoke about this in an interview with the Ukrinform agency.
Tkachenko noted that, according to available data, 200 thousand Mariupol residents left their city, fleeing the war that Russia brought to Ukrainian soil, “at the same time, every third of them returned home, to Mariupol, to the occupation.”
According to estimates, this is approximately 67-70 thousand people. In my opinion, these are terrible numbers,” he emphasized.
According to the people’s deputy, the displaced people decide to return and TOT because they were unable to start a new life:
- did not receive proper assistance from the state – no housing, no social support, compensation, work, etc.;
- a large number of IDPs were unable to find work due to the skeptical attitude of employers towards them, and all the offers that are provided to displaced people are actually very low paid;
- one can even talk about a certain discrimination against migrants in the labor market. Salaries often do not exceed 8-12 thousand UAH.
When displaced people start working, they lose the right to payments from the state to compensate for rental housing costs, which amount to about 2,000 UAH per month per person and 3,000 UAH for children and people with disabilities. At the same time, there are very few places with human living conditions available free of charge,” Tkachenko noted.
