The Ukrainian Embassy blamed the Greek Communist Party for the attack and demanded an immediate investigation.
In Greece, people with communist flags attacked Ukrainians gathered at the Taras Shevchenko monument to honor the memory of those killed in the Holodomor. The Ukrainian Embassy expressed a strong protest and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice. The corresponding statement was issued at the embassy on Saturday, November 23.
The incident took place in the city of Mandra, where a monument to Taras Shevchenko was erected. There, a group of aggressive individuals under communist flags and slogans attacked Ukrainians, among them women and children from Ukrainian schools and associations.
The embassy accused the Greek Communist Party of violent provocative actions.
“This act of provocation, which culminated in physical attacks, including an attack on a Ukrainian diplomat that resulted in bodily harm, is completely unacceptable and a flagrant international violation. [норм]”, said the message.
The embassy called on Greek law enforcement agencies to immediately investigate the incident and ensure accountability for those responsible.
They noted the need to protect the rights of people and communities to commemorate historical tragedies without fear of intimidation or violence.
It was previously reported that a Ukrainian man had died while in police custody in Poland.
