Authorities announced an emergency evacuation of the town of Grindovik and the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa complex.

A volcanic eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, south of the capital Reykjavik. This was reported by the RUV television and radio company on Thursday, November 21.

In the late evening of November 20, strong tremors began on the peninsula, after which the volcano began to erupt at 23:14. It was noted that there was no direct risk to the surrounding infrastructure.

Authorities announced an emergency evacuation of the town of Grindovik and the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa complex.

The fissure through which the lava flows is three kilometers long. The size of the eruption was significantly smaller than the previous episode in August.

This is the seventh volcanic eruption on the peninsula since December 2023, the previous ones were in August and June.

Let’s remember that in early November, one of the most active volcanoes, Levotobi Laki Laki, erupted on the island of Flores in Indonesia. At least 10 people died.
