The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne upheld the appeal of former football player Anatoly Tymoshchuk against the decision of the UAF disciplinary committee.
The 45-year-old Zenit coach, a native of Lutsk, former captain of Shakhtar Donetsk and the Ukrainian national team, demanded that the sanctions imposed on him due to his continued work in the Russian Federation be lifted, writes Tribuna.com.
In March 2022, the UAF deprived him of all titles and a coaching license and removed him from the official register of national teams for life.
Tymoshchuk filed an appeal with CAS in 2023 – the hearing of the case took place in April 2024. Now the court has overturned the decision of the Ukrainian football authorities.
CAS justified its decision by the fact that during the period from the beginning of the full-scale invasion until March 11, 2022, Tymoshchuk did not take any actions due to which such disciplinary sanctions would need to be taken against him.
The CAS decision for Tribuna.com was commented on by the UAF:
The UAF has indeed already received a decision from CAS. Unfortunately, Europeans approached this matter as formally as possible and confirmed a partial misunderstanding of the realities in which we live. The position of the Ukrainian football community is clear and has never changed. People like Tymoshchuk have no place in Ukrainian football,” the UAF said.
Tymoshchuk has been working as an assistant head coach on the Zenit coaching staff since 2017 and has not given up his job in the aggressor country.
