The Russian war against Ukraine only emphasizes the need to strengthen the air defense system. It remains one of NATO’s top priorities.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed gratitude to Romania for supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, noting that NATO is ready to effectively defend each ally. Ukrinform reported this on Monday, November 18.
“Romania is a committed friend of Ukraine and provides significant assistance, including the Patriot system to support critical air defense. You also signed a 10-year security agreement with Ukraine, emphasizing the sustainable foundation of your support,” said Rutte in a meeting with Ukraine Prime Minister of Romania Marcel Ciolacu.
NATO is currently working to implement the commitments made at the Alliance’s Washington Summit.
“We are seeing a dangerous escalation of the war with North Korean troops fighting Russian troops against Ukraine. This is happening with ammunition supplied to Russia by North Korea, drones from Iran and dual-use weapons. provided by China, which feeds them all. The Russian war machine shows that our security is truly global in scale,” the NATO leader.
In his opinion, the Russian war against Ukraine only emphasizes the need to strengthen the air defense system. Therefore, Rutte added, it is and remains one of the main priorities of the Alliance. Today, NATO and Romania leaders discussed, in particular, joining allied efforts to protect Romania’s airspace from Russian violations and provocations.
“NATO has strengthened its air defense on the eastern flank, and at the moment, the allies are deploying hundreds of 5th generation combat aircraft. I can tell you, Prime Minister, that NATO takes the security of the Black Sea region very seriously . We are ready to protect and defend all allies,” Rutte said.
Let’s recall that on October 17, the Romanian Air Force scrambled four fighters in the sky after an unidentified flying target crossed the border.
Also on October 4, fragments of a Russian drone, used by the Russian Federation to attack Ukraine, were rediscovered in Romania.
