When asked about Scholz’s call, Justin Trudeau said it was good to have an open line of communication with Putin.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has backed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s decision to speak directly with Vladimir Putin, saying ending the war would require some engagement with the Russian leader, Bloomberg reports.
When asked about Scholz’s call, Trudeau suggested it would be good to have an open line of communication with Putin.
“We all understand how important it is to see an end to violence in Ukraine, to see an end to conflicts around the world,” Trudeau said in Peru, where he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
“It requires a certain level of engagement with partners, with whom in many cases we disagree,” he said.
Trudeau was quick to add that Canada and its allies continue to work closely with Zelensky. “It’s good that there are talks about this, but the level of trust I have in Vladimir Putin is now, perhaps, at its lowest level,” he said.
He said Canada is committed to the success of Ukraine and wants the conflict to end as soon as possible. “There may be windows where this could happen in the coming months,” he said, without elaborating.
But ending the conflict on Ukraine’s terms will require US support with the arrival of the Donald Trump administration, he said.
“Let’s be clear: All the allies in the world cannot replace the complete end of the United States’ support for Ukraine,” Trudeau said.
Let’s recall that Scholz had a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin on Friday, November 15. The chancellor’s press service said that Scholz in the conversation “condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine and called on Putin to end it and withdraw troops.” “Scholz also noted Germany’s firm determination to support Ukraine.”
The conversation marked the first direct communication between Scholz and Putin in nearly two years.
The chancellor also plans to speak again with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after his talks with Putin.
