In Romania, on the eve of the presidential election, a pro-Ukraine candidate is leading. We are talking about the Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu. This is confirmed by data from a survey by the sociological company INSCOP, Reuters reports.
According to the poll, the 56-year-old Social Democratic leader Ciolaku received 25.3%.
In second place is the leader of the far-right opposition party, Djordje Simion. The leader of the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) has 19.1%.
As you know, Colaku strongly supports Ukraine, its membership in the EU and NATO. Simion opposes aid to Ukraine, especially military aid.
The leader of the center-right opposition party Union Save Romania (USR), Elena Lasconi, will receive 14.3%, according to an INSCOP poll. Former NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joana, running as an independent candidate, has 13.3% support, while Nicolae Ciuca, the leader of the Liberals, who run the government in coalition with Ciolaku’s Social Democrats, has 9.1%
In Romania, the president’s powers include overseeing foreign policy, so the winner will play a decisive role in determining how committed the country is to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. The winner of the election will also appoint the next prime minister, complicating policymaking and prospects
We remind you that the Constitutional Court of Romania did not include the pro-Russian far-right politician in the list of presidential candidates. We are talking about Diana Shoshoaka, leader of the opposition party SOS Romania, which won two seats in the European Parliament in June.
It was previously reported that former NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joan will take part in the presidential elections in Romania, scheduled for the end of November.
