Four California residents are accused of making thousands of dollars in false insurance claims by claiming their car was damaged by a bear.
In the United States, four people were arrested for a massive insurance fraud scheme: they filed claims that their cars were damaged by a bear, when the damage was caused by a person dressed as an animal, reports ABC News.
Among the suspects are 39-year-old Ararat Chirkinyan, 32-year-old Vahe Muradkhanyan, 26-year-old Ruben Tamrazyan and 39-year-old Alfiya Tsukerman.
According to the report, the scammers filed a claim that a “bear” destroyed the Rolls-Royce Ghost, and even provided a video. However, the Department of Insurance, suspecting a fraud, began an investigation called Operation Bear Claw. Experts found that this is not the first incident: previously, damage to the Mercedes G63 AMG and Mercedes E350 was claimed for insurance payments.
A biologist involved in the case confirmed that the “bear” in the video was not real. One of the suspects was found to be in possession of a bear costume, and by the time of his arrest, insurers had already paid the scammers more than $141,000.
