German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats and opposition lawmakers have reached an agreement on a date for early elections.
The new Bundestag is due to be elected on February 23, 2025. Studio ARD reports this. However, the final decision on the date of the elections will be made by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Scholz will also present a vote of confidence on December 16, paving the way for elections. After all, at least 60 days must pass from the moment of the vote to the early elections.
Let us recall that on November 6 it became known that the current German Chancellor fired Finance Minister Christian Lindner. This led to the collapse of the ruling “traffic light” coalition, and, consequently, the need to hold early elections (not in September 2025, as planned, but already in February).
The power coalition in Germany collapsed hours after it became clear that Donald Trump had won in the United States. Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed the finance minister from the Free Democrats, a partner party in the coalition. In general, it was an unusual “traffic light”. “Red” social democrats and greens, sorry “greens” on the left side of the spectrum. “Yellow” Free Democratic Party (FDP) on the right of center. The Left wanted social transfers, investment in growth and a green transition, while the VDP traditionally wanted less government intervention in the economy and less spending.
German media note that according to current polls, the center-right alliance of Friedrich Merz is in the lead, gaining more than 30%. The right-wing extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ranks second (18%), and the Social Democratic Party of Germany is third (16%). However, Olaf Scholf believes that he still has a chance of winning the elections.
