The problem at this stage is the lack of a deterrent mechanism for signing a peace agreement.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Monday, November 11, announced that “definite progress” has been achieved in ending the armed conflict in Lebanon, The Guardian reports.
According to Saar, Israel is ready to stop its ground operations against terrorists if it knows that Hezbollah is at a sufficient distance from the country’s northern border and also does not have the ability to arm itself with new fire systems.
The official noted that the diplomatic attempt at an agreement is taking place through the mediation of the US and now “faces the problem of the lack of a deterrent mechanism for signing a peace agreement.”
The publication notes that diplomatic efforts are not limited to American channels, as Israeli Army Radio reported that Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer visited Russia last week to discuss ways to achieve a peace truce in Lebanon.
Saar said that Russia could play a role in the ceasefire agreement by helping to ensure that weapons do not flow to Hezbollah through Syria, where Russian troops are present.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah claims that it has not received specific peace proposals, and “only observed a big movement between Washington, Moscow and Tehran, waiting to see how it ends.”
The previous day, it was reported that Israel for the first time admitted its involvement in the explosions of pagers to Hezbollah militants.
