Qatar, which has a Hamas political office in its capital, has acted as a mediator in the conflict with Egypt, as the parties do not officially maintain direct contact.
Qatar has suspended its mediation efforts to reach an agreement on the exchange of hostages in the Gaza Strip. Doha can return them on the condition that Israel and Hamas are serious about ending the war. Reuters wrote this on Saturday, November 9.
“The Qatari government made the decision after it became clear that both sides refused to cooperate properly,” the statement said.
Qatar is known to have told the parties 10 days ago in the latest attempts to reach an agreement that it will abandon its efforts to mediate between Hamas and Israel if an agreement is not reached in this round.
“Qatar will renew these efforts with its partners when the parties demonstrate their readiness and seriousness to end the brutal war,” the country’s Foreign Ministry said.
There was no official reaction from Hamas or Israel to this statement.
It is indicated that, apart from the brief activity last month, there have been no real negotiations between the parties since the bodies of six murdered Israeli captives were discovered in the Gaza tunnel at the end of August. Then, during a temporary truce in November that Qatar and Egypt helped broker, Hamas freed 105 hostages and Israel freed 240 Palestinian prisoners.
Meanwhile, CNN wrote, citing sources in the United States and Qatar, that Doha agreed to expel Hamas from the country after a request from the United States.
“Hamas is a terrorist group that has killed Americans and continues to hold American hostages. After rejecting repeated offers to release the hostages, its leaders are no longer welcome in the capitals of any American partner,” a senior official told CNN.
There are still 101 hostages known to be in Gaza. Israel’s military campaign, launched in response to a Hamas attack on October 7, has resulted in the deaths of more than 43,000 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The UN reported that 70% of the casualties in the first six months of the conflict were women and children.
