One possible clause involves Kyiv pledging not to join NATO for at least 20 years.
Donald Trump’s “peace plan” to end the war in Ukraine is likely to include a requirement to abandon NATO membership for 20 years and freeze the front line without returning to the territories (although not yet clear if this also applies to the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Kursk Region). This is what The Wall Street Journal said, citing “informed sources.”
At the same time, the sources admitted that Trump has not yet approved a specific plan. Although advisers have offered their ideas, Trump will make the final decision.
One of the ideas proposed to Trump, detailed by three people close to the newly elected president, is Kyiv’s promise not to join NATO for at least 20 years. In return, the United States will continue to provide Ukraine with weapons to deter a future Russian attack.
Under this plan, the front line would be frozen and both sides would agree to a demilitarized zone. It was unclear who controlled the territory, but an adviser said the peacekeeping force would not include American troops.
“We can provide training and other support, but the point of the gun is that we are not sending American men and women to keep the peace in Ukraine And we are not going to pay you to do it,” he said to one of the members of Trump’s team.
Keith Kellogg and Fred Fleitz, who previously worked in Trump’s first White House, presented Trump with an action plan that included refusing to supply arms to Ukraine until Kyiv agreed to peace negotiations with Russia. Ukraine can try to recover the lost territories, but this will have to be done through diplomatic negotiations.
It is still unclear which of these strategies Trump will pursue, the publication notes.
The media states that Ukraine and Russia still pursue completely different military goals and do not seek to change them. In particular, the Kremlin shows little desire to negotiate and shows its willingness to escalate the conflict.
There is also expected to be strong opposition from some NATO allies who view Russia’s aggression against Ukraine as an immediate threat to their countries.
As is known, the Senator from Ohio and ally of the US Republican presidential candidate JD Vance said that he will not call the owner of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, an “enemy” and called for negotiations with Russia.
