The appearance of North Korean troops on European soil is a historic event that should make everyone think, noted the NATO Secretary General.
NATO member countries must do more to change the course of the war in Ukraine. Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte wrote this in a Politico column published on Wednesday, November 6.
According to him, the appearance of North Korean troops on European soil is a historical event that should make everyone wonder if “we are not standing on the threshold of something darker than the destruction that has already happened to the people of Ukraine.”
Rutte emphasized that the deepening of military and economic ties between Russia and North Korea not only threatens the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, but also threatens global security.
He recalled that since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, NATO member countries have provided Ukraine with more than 99% of all military support and are on track to fulfill the financial commitment to provide Ukraine with 40 billion euros in military aid this year. .
“What we need now is a political commitment to continue this course for the long term. So far, our support has helped Ukraine continue its fight. But we need to do more to change the trajectory of the conflict. We must increase the cost to Putin and his fellow authoritarian regimes.” wrote Rutte.
The NATO Secretary General added that there should also be more investment in engagement with Indo-Pacific partners.
“Supporting Ukraine costs only a small part of our annual military budgets. It is a small price to pay for peace. The question is, can we not pay?”
Let’s remember that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the reaction of the world community to the arrival of the DPRK contingent on Russian territory for further participation in the war against Ukraine was not as strong as it should have been.
Meanwhile, Russia called the statements about the transfer of North Korean troops “disinformation”.
