Spain’s King Philip VI was pelted with stones and mud in Valencia amid accusations of a poor response to the country’s recent devastating floods.
The Spanish king and queen arrived in Valencia the day before to visit the towns of Paiporta and Chiva, two communities hit hard by floods.
However, angry local residents threw mud at the monarch and the senior officials accompanying him. They called him a “murderer” and demanded that he “get out” of the region.
Given the circumstances, at some point it was decided to suspend the visit of the king and his wife, despite the fact that Philip VI and Letizia did not want this, Spanish media note.
Philip VI himself, commenting on the incident, called for “hope for the people” and to understand the emergency situation.
You have to understand the anger and despair that a lot of people have because of what they’ve been through, he said.
According to official data, at least 272 people were killed as a result of the natural disaster in Spain.
