A suspect in the mass shooting of participants and spectators of the Independence Day parade in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago, has been detained by police near Lake Forest, Illinois. This was announced by local authorities at a briefing on Monday night, July 4 (local time).

Shooting at a parade near Chicago
At least six people were killed in the shooting opened by unidentified individuals on July 4 at the U.S. Independence Day parade in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago. 36 more were injured.
According to Highland Park Police spokesman Chris O’Neill, the alleged gun was found on the roof of a business near the scene of the accident.
Tighter control of weapons
On June 25, U.S. President Joseph Biden signed a law to tighten control over the circulation of firearms. The document includes the introduction of more stringent screening before the sale of firearms to people under the age of 21, as well as the allocation of $ 15 billion to fund mental health services for citizens and ensure the safety of educational institutions. It also prohibits individuals convicted of domestic violence from obtaining firearms for five years and provides states with $ 750 million in grants for crisis intervention programs.
Mass murder is on the rise
The law was passed against the background of increasing cases of massacres from guns in the country. So, on May 24, at an elementary school in the city of Uvalde, Texas, 19 children and three adults, including the attacker, were killed in a shooting.
Shortly before that, on May 15, an 18-year-old white man shot and killed 10 black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
