Norway has allocated NOK 1.4 billion to help supply the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.
Together with other countries, Norway provided funding that allowed Romania to send the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre explained that, together with other countries, Norway provided funding that allowed Romania to send the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.
According to a message on the Norwegian government website, air defense is provided under the Nansen Support Program for Ukraine.
Støre stressed that Norway’s support for Ukraine is based on what Ukraine needs most, and “we will continue to provide it as long as it is needed.”
Norway has already given priority several times to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, both through donations of its own reserves to the Norwegian Armed Forces and through international cooperation initiatives.
Among other things, Norway donated an air defense system to NASAMS. It also provided personnel to train Ukrainian soldiers in the use of air defenses.
Earlier this year, Norway contributed about NOK 4 billion to fund Ukrainian air defense, particularly as part of Germany’s initiative to purchase Patriot missiles for Ukraine.
During the NATO summit this summer, the Norwegian government announced that NOK 1 billion of this amount will be used for the donation, in cooperation with Germany, of a full IRIS-T air defense battery to Ukraine, as well as for repairs and maintenance.
In October, the Patriot missile defense system, provided by the Romanian government, already arrived in Ukraine. The country provided the system in the most advanced PAC-3+ configuration, capable of effectively intercepting ballistic missiles. This version is equipped with a more powerful second-generation AN/MPQ-65 radar, which has a longer detection range, better capabilities in target identification and ballistic missile tracking.
This happened a month after the country’s President Klaus Iohannis signed a decree on September 5 on the free transfer of the system to Ukraine.
