The party of the current Prime Minister of Poland, the Civic Platform, plans to nominate the popular mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, as its candidate in the next presidential election.
According to RMF24 journalists, the decision to nominate Trzaskowski has actually already been made by the party leadership.
In the “Civil Platform” they allegedly hesitated between Trzaskowski and the current Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski, and, finally, the arguments in favor of Trzaskowski, together with the data of opinion polls, outweighed.
It is believed that Sikorsky’s candidacy has less chance of receiving votes from a more centrist and left-wing electorate. The party allegedly fears that Sikorsky, who is prone to straightforward statements, might distract some voters with some remark in the political struggle.
The mayor of Warsaw will be announced as a candidate for the presidency of Poland on December 7. After this, he will immediately go on a campaign tour.
Presidential elections in Poland will be held next spring. Andrzej Duda’s term of office expires in August 2025.
So far, the only official candidate is Slawomir Menzen from the right-wing populist Confederation party.
