According to the department, four local police officers and three other members of the Mexican National Guard were injured.
In total, Mexican law enforcement officials detained 11 people.
The events in the Mexican state come amid US pressure on Mexico to step up its fight against drug trafficking. Mexico is demanding that the United States do more to stop the supply of weapons to criminal groups across the common border.
