The area under coca cultivation last year increased by 10% compared to 2022 – to 253 thousand hectares.
Colombia is setting new records for coca cultivation and cocaine production in 2023. This is stated in the annual report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The area of coca plantations in Colombia increased by 10% in 2023, reaching 253 thousand hectares. This is a record figure.
According to the report, the potential production of cocaine increased by 53%. UN experts estimate the potential production of cocaine at 2,664 tons.
“Today, one hectare of coca crop produces twice as much cocaine as two years ago,” said UNODC Regional Director Candice Welsh during a visit to Bogota.
Let’s remember that in 2022 the area of coca plantations in Colombia will be 230 thousand hectares. In the summer of 2024, it was reported that drug dealers could no longer cope with the amount of cocaine production achieved by Colombia.
