The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Alliance, Gerry Connolly, believes that, first of all, it is necessary to restore Ukraine’s sovereignty over its territories.
Ukraine is on an “irreversible path” to joining the Alliance, and the ongoing war on its territory is the main obstacle to this. This was said by the President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Gerry Connolly, Radio Liberty reports.
“I think we should resolve this, we should restore Ukraine’s sovereignty over its territories, and then make sure the path to NATO is open,” the official stressed.
According to him, both NATO and the US government support Ukraine’s aspirations for membership. He acknowledged that Kyiv has some impatience about NATO membership, but the situation on the battlefield remains difficult: “the presence of Russian troops there and the occupation of Russia: must be resolved.”
The President of NATO PA emphasized that Ukraine’s accession to NATO should cover its entire territory, including the occupied parts.
“We don’t know what the outcome of this fight will be, we know what outcome we expect. And that’s why NATO and the US government have committed great resources and cooperation with our brothers in Ukraine to ensure that they endure and restore full sovereignty over all their territories,” Connolly said.
Connolly noted that the possibility of inviting Ukraine to NATO before the end of Joe Biden’s presidential term requires consultations with other members of the Alliance. According to him, the main priority now is to end the violence committed by Russian troops on Ukrainian territories.
Separately, Connolly commented on the relations between the United States and Germany on the issue of Ukraine’s membership in NATO.
“Germany is a good ally. You know, skepticism comes and goes. I can tell you, based on my conversations with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He is very supportive of NATO’s goals and aspirations of the German that completely coincides with American goals in relation to Ukraine,” he said.
We remind you that the US authorities are no longer opposed to inviting Ukraine to NATO. This may affect Germany’s position.
Earlier it became known that France is open to the idea of inviting Ukraine to NATO.
