The department believes that Ukraine now has no chance of conducting a successful offensive to liberate its territories, while the Russian army continues to advance.
The German Ministry of Defense is losing confidence in Ukraine’s ability to defeat Russia on the battlefield. However, the head of the department, Boris Pistorius, still believes in the success of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Analyst Julian Röpke wrote this on Sunday, October 13, in his column for Bild.
He recalled that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, at the beginning of his career, repeatedly said: “Ukraine must win this war!” He kept repeating this point in many official meetings and public events. However, according to Repke, within the department, faith in Ukraine’s victory over the Russian occupation army seems to have disappeared.
According to a recent assessment prepared by the ministry, Ukraine currently does not have the capacity to launch a successful offensive to liberate its territories. The German military noted the significant depletion of the Ukrainian armed forces and hoped that worsening weather conditions would help slow the Russian advance.
The department also said that the Russian army continues to advance, and the German military does not have a clear understanding of how to stop this offensive. Also of concern is that Russia is determined to continue fighting, which is of “deep concern” to Germany.
Despite this, Germany does not plan to stop providing military aid to Ukraine. As Roepke notes, the Bundeswehr will no longer transfer large volumes of aid, but deliveries will continue at the same level. In 2025, Ukraine will receive about 100 thousand artillery shells, which corresponds to the volumes of 2024. At the same time, Russia has 375 thousand shells per month.
When asked if Boris Pistorius still believes in Ukraine’s success, the department’s spokesperson assured that the minister’s position remains unchanged: “Yes.”
Earlier, the Russian-language edition of the German tabloid BILD reported that Germany does not intend to transfer large military equipment to Ukraine, except as already announced.
Also recently, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a new military package worth 600 million euros, including the fifth IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense system, tanks, howitzers, drones and other positions.
