The German side recently spotted Russian spy ships in the Baltic, studying the pipeline network.
The German elite anti-terrorism unit of the Federal Police GSG 9 will protect the underwater infrastructure against the background of the appearance of Russian spy ships. In particular, we are talking about pipelines in the North and Baltic Seas. The corresponding order came from Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Feser, reports the German magazine Spiegel.
GSG 9 is the future station of a maritime task force permanently in Neustadt in Schleswig-Holstein. From here, forces specialized in counter-terrorism operations can respond more quickly to crisis situations.
The risk of sabotage against infrastructure in the North and Baltic Seas became clear after the Nord Stream attack.
German police and military forces have long observed dozens of Russian spy ships probing a network of pipelines and other underwater lines under the North and Baltic seas.
GSG 9’s maritime units have high-speed boats and specially trained divers who can operate from Federal Police ships.
As we have already written, Tallinn and Helsinki have expanded their cooperation in the field of maritime defense, the parties are developing specific plans – how, if necessary, to completely close the Baltic Sea to Russian ships.
