The head of the Federal Agency for Grids fears that technical work on the Nord Stream will be “uninterrupted maintenance” for political reasons, and calls for preparations for power savings.
The German Federal Grid Agency (BNetzA) fears the complete cessation of gas supplies from the Russian Federation and urges the country’s residents to conserve energy. This statement was made by the head of BNetzA Klaus Müller in an interview with Funke Mediengruppe, excerpts from which were published on Saturday, July 2.
From July 11 to July 21, Nord Stream AG will temporarily close both strings of the Nord Stream gas pipeline for “scheduled preventive maintenance.”
The question is whether this maintenance will be “non-stop maintenance for political reasons,” Muller said.
Check the operation of heating boilers, reduce gas consumption
If gas supplies from Russia are “reduced over a longer period of time, we need to talk more seriously about savings,” the head of the federal agency said. According to him, 12 weeks before the start of the heating season should be used to prepare for it.
Klaus Müller urged German residents to quickly check the operation of gas-fired boilers and radiators. “Maintenance can reduce gas consumption by 10-15 percent,” he said.
“It is better to carry out the work now, and not in the fall,” the BNetzA chief recommended. Locksmiths should focus on heating and hot water, Muller added. In addition, he said, families should now discuss whether “we should maintain the usual temperature in each of the rooms of the house in the winter, or whether some of them might be colder.”
Germany’s Ministry of Economy completely turned off the night lighting of the facade
Earlier, Germany, France and Japan launched large -scale energy conservation campaigns. In Berlin and Tokyo, governments called on households and businesses to reduce energy consumption, and in Paris, the heads of the country’s three leading energy companies, two of which are partially state-owned, did so. France.
“The best energy is what we don’t exhaust,” says an open letter published in the weekly French Journal du Dimanche. It was signed by Patrick Pouyanne, Jean-Bernard Levy and Catherine MacGregor, the CEOs of energy concern TotalEnergies, power industry giant Électricité de France (EDF), and Gazprom’s longtime partner Engie, respectively.
In turn, the German Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection has completely turned off the night lighting of the facade of its headquarters, the lighting of works of art displayed here and fountains, as well as air conditioning system. In rooms where this is technically impossible or violates labor protection requirements, the temperature will be maintained at 26 degrees instead of 22 degrees.
Due to a sharp decline in Russia’s gas supplies through the Nord Stream, the ministry has introduced the second of three phases of an emergency plan in case of an emergency in the German gas sector.

It was previously reported that Gazprom would completely block Nord Stream-1. The annual planned preventive maintenance of the gas pipeline will last ten days, starting July 11th.
In June, Gazprom reduced gas supplies to Europe via Nord Stream 1 by 60%. The Turkish Stream also stopped for a week.
At the same time, Gazprom could use the free capacity of the Ukrainian GTS and the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, but it did not, exacerbating the gas crisis in Europe.
