NAEC Energoatom successfully completed the 2024 repair campaign and prepared all 9 Ukrainian-controlled power units for winter operation. The Ministry of Energy announced this on Wednesday, October 9.
“All available nuclear units are ready for winter loading We are entering the heating season with the highest level of readiness,” the statement of the service of the Ministry of Energy quoted the Minister that German Galushchenko.
The ministry clarified that preparations for winter were completed 11 days ahead of schedule.
There are three nuclear power plants in Ukraine: Rivne Nuclear Power Plant (4 power units), South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant (3 power units) and Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant (2 power units). The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant has been occupied by the Russian military since 2022.
The Ministry of Energy states that the huge damage caused by Russia’s massive attacks, including one of the largest attacks in the energy sector on August 26, continues to complicate the operation of the energy system. In addition, Russian troops do not stop the daily shelling of energy infrastructure facilities.
According to the ministry, since October 2022, Russia has conducted more than a thousand strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, and this year alone, 9 GW of generating capacity has been lost due to strikes.
The United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), transferred a batch of materials to Ukraine to protect the energy infrastructure.
