Armored vehicles and hundreds of soldiers will be deployed in Latvia next January when Sweden’s first NATO military operation begins.
In a few months, about 600 Swedish troops will go to Latvia to join NATO ground forces as part of the Canadian-led brigade. SVT reported it.
Armored vehicles and hundreds of soldiers will be deployed in Latvia next January when the Swedish army’s first NATO operation begins.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Henrik Rosdaal, who commands the Swedish battalion, the main objective is to contribute to deterrence.
“If we get to the point where Russia starts to act, we’re going to face a lot of different threats,” he said.
Rosdaal added that the recruitment of those going to Latvia is almost complete.
As Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds said, the Swedish battalion will be an important addition to NATO’s joint efforts to contain Russia in the Baltic region.
“Russia is an existential threat and we have to be ready for different situations, and the Swedish mission shows that we as an alliance are ready to respond to any kind of threat, whether here or anywhere on the borders of NATO,” he said.
Let’s remember that the Swedish government has proposed a sharp increase in the defense budget in the period 2025-2030 in order to meet the NATO target of 2% of GDP for defense spending.
As reported, Ukraine and Sweden discussed the possibility of training Ukrainian pilots.
