Ukraine could become a NATO member, despite the fact that some of its territories will remain occupied.
There are ways to solve the problem of applying NATO Article 5 on mutual defense, which would mean war with Russia for the Alliance countries. This was stated by former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the Financial Times reported.
Comparisons are always very dangerous because no analogies are 100% correct, but the United States has guarantees for Japan’s security. But they do not cover the Kuril Islands, which Japan views as Japanese territory controlled by Russia, the former Secretary General noted.
Stoltenberg also gave another example where West Germany considered East Germany to be part of greater Germany. This country did not have an embassy in East Berlin at that time, but NATO only defended West Germany.
The former Secretary General believes that “when there is a will, there are ways to find a solution.” However, he emphasized that a limit is needed that will determine where Article 5 applies, and Ukraine must control the entire territory of this border.
Let us remind you that on October 3, the new NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arrived in Ukraine, and this was his first visit to Kyiv in his new status. Rutte met with President Vladimir Zelensky, with whom they discussed the prospects for cooperation between Ukraine and the Alliance, the victory plan, the future Ramstein, as well as the situation at the front and weapons.
