The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry does not understand why Switzerland decided to support the Chinese-Brazilian initiative to end the war, and are disappointed with this decision.
The department recalled that in June Ukraine and Switzerland held the first global peace summit. And after this, the countries continued to cooperate to increase the number of signatories of the final Communiqué.
There is no need to create additional formats and platforms to discuss ways to achieve peace for Ukraine. The Peace Formula provides complete tools and appropriate platforms for discussing ideas and consolidating various visions and concepts. Any initiatives that do not contain a clear reference to the UN Charter and do not guarantee the full restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine are unacceptable. Such “peaceful initiatives” only create the illusion of dialogue, while the aggressor continues his criminal actions, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Switzerland on September 28 supported the peace proposal between China and Brazil because it believes it calls for a ceasefire and envisages a political resolution to the conflict.
They say the Chinese-Brazilian proposal “offers an alternative to the bellicose speeches we may have heard this week at the UN from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides.”
Reuters writes that 17 countries have already taken part in a meeting of the Friends of Peace group, where they discussed “preventing the escalation of war.”
Last week it became known that Hungary will join the Friends of Peace initiative, organized by China and Brazil, calling for negotiations to begin as quickly as possible to end the war in Ukraine.
Among the participants in the initiative to reconcile Russia and Ukraine on Putin’s terms are Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Zambia and Kenya.
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that his country, together with Brazil, would create a “Friends of Peace” platform to resolve the “Ukrainian crisis.” He added that the main message of their meeting would be the beginning of peace negotiations: they say that the countries of the Global South are “tired of paying the price for a war thousands of kilometers away,” and the transatlantic community is “only adding fuel to the fire.”
At the same time, the head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry says that the idea of creating “Friends of Peace” belongs to Hungary.
