Completion of the mission is planned within the next 12 months, but no later than September 2025.
The United States has announced the end of its military mission in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group in Iraq. This was stated in the joint statement of the governments of the United States and Iraq, published yesterday on the website of the American State Department.
The document contains three paragraphs, the first of which states that the mission is planned to be completed within the next 12 months, but no later than September 2025. However, the statement did not specify the scale and specific dates of the withdrawal of troops.
It is indicated that there will be a transition to a bilateral security partnership in a way that supports Iraqi forces and maintains pressure on the Islamic State (ISIS).
“Second: Because Iraq is an important member of the Coalition, and to prevent the return of the ISIS terrorist threat from northeastern Syria, and subject to conditions on the ground and consultations between Iraq, the United States and the member of the Coalition, the active The military mission of the Coalition Syria… will last until September 2026,” the statement said.
In addition, the high military commission undertakes to formulate the procedures necessary to achieve the aforementioned, the time and mechanisms for their implementation, including procedures for ensuring the physical protection of coalition advisers who were present in Iraq during the transition.
The statement also added that Iraq thanked the coalition for the support and assistance given to the country’s security forces to deal with ISIS.
“We emphasize the need to continue all efforts to ensure that the threat from this terrorist organization does not return in any way,” the statement said.
Let’s remember that in January 2024, the United States and Iraq held the first round of negotiations on the withdrawal of American troops from the country. There are currently about 2,500 US troops in Iraq acting as advisers. Another 900 Americans are in neighboring Syria as part of a coalition formed in 2014 to fight the Islamic State, which has attacked the two Middle Eastern countries.
