Zhu Hengpeng’s last public appearance was at the end of April. Don’t know where the economist is now.
One of China’s leading economists, Zhu Hengpeng, disappeared after criticizing Chinese President Xi Jinping’s leadership in a closed chat. The Wall Street Journal reported this.
The publication, citing sources, writes that in the spring, 54-year-old Zhu Hengpeng made several unbiased statements, including about China’s economic slowdown, and also boldly said that Xi Jinping is mortal. The economist left the message in a closed group chat on the Chinese WeChat app.
A criminal case was opened against Hengpeng, he was detained and dismissed from the Institute of Economics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (Cass). The economist worked at the institute for more than 20 years, 10 of which he was deputy director.
Zhu Hengpeng’s last public appearance was at the end of April. Then he spoke at a traditional forum about caring for the elderly.
Where is the economist now and it is not known what happened to him. His name disappeared from Cass’s staff lists, he did not respond to media emails, and no one answered the door to his Beijing apartment.
Let’s recall that earlier China accused an officer couple of spying for Britain.
