Invitations to the Georgian Prime Minister for a reception with the US President have been cancelled.
The Georgian service of Voice of America (VOA) writes about this, citing American officials.
The US presidential administration has cancelled an invitation to Georgian Prime Minister Kobakhidze to Biden’s traditional reception in New York on September 25 with the participation of world leaders and UN officials.
According to sources, US National Security Advisor Sullivan also refused to meet with the Georgian delegation led by Kobakhidze. The Georgian Prime Minister’s office, in turn, reported that a meeting with Sullivan was not planned.
Speaking to Voice of America, another senior U.S. administration official adds that “the Georgian government’s recent actions and statements demonstrate a shocking disregard for democracy and the will of the Georgian people.” However, he says he will not discuss the details of individual diplomatic negotiations.
Voice of America also learned that the reason for this step is the anti-democratic behavior of the Georgian government and a number of steps, in particular, the adoption of the law on foreign agents, the actions of the Anti-Corruption Bureau against non-governmental organizations – Transparency International Georgia and “Elect Europe”, as well as the ruling party’s statements about banning opposition parties.
As reported by the Voice of America, the latest communication with the Georgian government did not give the American administration hope that Tbilisi would change its course. On the contrary, the steps of the Georgian government convince the administration that it is determined to ignore Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration and the freedom of the Georgian people.
