The military cooperation between Finland and Estonia is increasingly focused on maritime defense and the aim is to develop concrete plans.
Tallinn and Helsinki are expanding their cooperation in the field of maritime defense, the parties are developing specific plans – how, if necessary, to completely close the Baltic Sea to Russian ships. This was announced by the Commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, Major General Andrus Marilou, in a comment to Helsingin Sanomat.
“Military cooperation between Finland and Estonia is increasingly focused on maritime defense, and the goal is to develop concrete plans for how neighboring countries can close the Gulf of Finland to Russian ships in the event of threat,” said Merilo.
He said: “Militarily, it can be done, we are ready for it, and we are also moving in this direction.”
At the same time, Mirilo did not specify whether such plans exist.
Earlier, the former editor-in-chief of the military magazine Suomen Sotilas Jaakko Puuperä said that “closing the Gulf of Finland is technically possible.”
He believes that in the event of a war in the Gulf of Finland, in addition to traditional methods of warfare, others can be used, for example, electronic warfare.
It was previously reported that Russia may have been involved in the destruction of the Balticconnector gas pipeline in October 2023, in the sea between Estonia and Finland, and the damage to a fiber optic cable off the Spitsbergen archipelago in January 2022.
Let’s remember that on October 10, the Finnish government announced that Russia attacked the Baltic Connector offshore gas pipeline located between Finland and Estonia.
