The reason for the deterioration of air quality in Kyiv is the burning of peat bogs, other ecosystems and autumn temperature fluctuations.
The press service of the Ministry of Environment reported this today, September 20.
As of 10:00, a significant excess of fine particles (dust, soot, smoke) is recorded in the air of Kyiv and its environs. The reason is the burning of peatlands, the main emission of which is fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10), which are components of smoke, the department notes.
To reduce the potential negative impact on health from air pollution, the Ministry of Environment recommends:
- limit your time outdoors;
- refrain from physical activity outdoors;
- close windows and doors tightly;
- refuse to ventilate the apartment and, if possible, use air conditioning and air purification systems;
- carry out wet cleaning in residential premises;
- increase fluid intake to 2-3 liters per day;
- If you have respiratory diseases, make sure you always have the necessary medication with you;
- If you feel unwell, consult a doctor.
People with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases should pay special attention to this advice, the department notes.
The ministry adds that every autumn, due to temperature fluctuations during the day and night, temperature inversions occur, causing the accumulation of harmful substances in the ground layer of air.
Warm air and humidity lead to fog, harmful substances from various emission sources hardly disperse. This affects air quality and pollution indicators, the Ministry of the District notes.
