The representatives strongly condemned the killings, persecutions, violations and arrests committed by the Maduro regime against the democratic opposition, the Venezuelan people and civil society.
Members of the European Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing Edmund Gonzalez as the elected president of Venezuela and condemning Nicolas Maduro for election fraud and human rights violations. This is reported on the website of the European Parliament.
309 MEPs voted for this decision, 201 voted against it and 12 abstained. The resolution strongly condemns “the election fraud orchestrated by the regime-controlled National Electoral Council, which refused to release official results.”
The European Parliament recognized Edmund Gonzalez as the country’s legitimate and democratically elected president, and also condemned the Venezuelan government’s issuance of a warrant for his arrest.
According to the resolution, observer reports clearly indicate that the presidential election in Venezuela on July 28, 2024 did not meet international standards. The representatives “strongly condemned the killings, persecutions, violations and arrests committed against the democratic opposition, Venezuelan citizens and civil society, calling for an end to the systematic violations of human rights ,” the document said.
In this regard, the European Parliament called for the introduction of international sanctions against the members of the National Electoral Council of Venezuela, Maduro personally and his inner circle.
It will be recalled that on July 29, the current President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, was declared the winner of the elections with 51% of the vote, compared to 44% for the opposition leader, Edmund Gonzalez. Opposition parties say their candidate won 70% of the vote.
