The country is calling for it to “take back control of its own asylum policy” by abandoning EU rules.
The government of the Netherlands has announced its desire to abandon compliance with the European Union’s migration rules. This was announced by Minister for Asylum and Migration Marjolein Faber at Platform X on Wednesday, September 18.
“I just told the European Commission that I want the Netherlands to ‘waive’ European immigration rules. We must take back control of our own asylum policy,” the politician said.
The proposal was supported by the leader of the country’s largest right-wing Freedom Party (PVV), Geert Wilders. He said the transition would take time, but called it a sign of a “fresh wind.”
To exclude the Netherlands from the EU migration system, the consent of all 27 of its members would be required.
Earlier, German Interior Minister Nancy Feser ordered the introduction of temporary controls at all German land borders and informed the EU Commission.
